“I was thinking how lucky I am that my son receives so much personal attention. Then I realized that he isn't the only one! Every child at RJA gets that kind of special attention. That's one of the things that sets this school apart.”

Disaster Relief Kids (DRK) Mitzvah Club

Students at The Saul Mirowitz Day School understand well their obligation to repair the world. But it's not all talk. Every day they are empowered to turn that understanding into action...but Tuesday lunch is special.

That's when DRK members — Disaster Relief Kids mitzvah club — spend their lunch together making a difference. DRK was founded in 2005 by a small group of students who wanted to do something to help victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Since then, the group has grown exponentially and its members have collected thousands of needed items and even thousands of dollars for projects including:

  • Hurricane victims resettling in St. Louis
  • Renovation of a synagogue in Biloxi, Mississippi
  • HIAS, the Hebrew International Aid Society
  • Jewish Federation of St. Louis’ Israel Emergency Campaign
  • Susan G. Komen for the Cure
  • KidSmart
  • Flawdogs Adoption
  • The Measles Project of the Red Cross
  • Autism Speaks
  • Make-a-Wish Foundation
